The Engagement Experiment

How to Turn Ordinary Posts into Engagement Magnets

If you’ve ever felt like social media is like throwing posts into the void, you’re not alone. With picky algorithms and shrinking attention spans ruling platforms today, it’s harder than ever to spark real engagement. So let’s dive into a new kind of social (media) experiment to see what type of content makes a post magnetic, and what causes it to flop.

Why Engagement Matters

Throughout the years, we have seen individuals and brands focus on the numbers when it comes to social media. Everyone cares about likes, comments, and shares, but how often do we stop to think about why these metrics matter so much?

Engagement on social media boosts visibility and reach by signaling to algorithms that prioritize interactive content. It also builds loyalty and trust with potential customers, provides valuable information about your brand and its offerings, and drives traffic and leads to your website. In other words, the more engagement you get, the more likely your content is to be seen, especially by users that don’t currently follow your account.

engagement = reach + trust + conversions.

Variables that Influence Engagement

The fact of the matter is engagement doesn’t happen by accident, it happens by design. There’s a few key variables that have a big impact on engagement:

  • Timing – it’s important to keep an eye on your analytics to see what time your audience is actively scrolling. There’s no point posting at 6 AM if your audience doesn’t open Instagram until after their second cup of coffee.
  • Visuals – Make sure they are crisp, bold, and eye-catching. This might mean graphics, but genuine, authentic photos and videos tend to work the best.
  • Copywriting – Use clear headlines, sprinkle in a bit of humor (when it fits), and aim for relatability. Think of social media captions as a conversation: talk to your audience, not at them.
  • Relevance – Try tapping into trends, culture, or audience pain points (even if it means making your intern do a trendy dance every now and then).

How to Conduct Your Own Engagement Experiment

Wondering what you can do for your brand to create viral content? Try some of these practical tips to test out new content for your own channel:

A/B Testing

Experiment with different types of copy: try adding some humor to your caption, rewording the phrase, or just writing a new caption all together while keeping your brand voice intact. See what works, and eliminate what doesn’t.

Be Authentic

Instead of looking for a stock photo, try capturing real images that genuinely represent your brand. On social media, people prefer authenticity over perfection. When in doubt, content of animals will always deliver.

Ask, Don’t Tell

Next time you write a caption try asking a simple, low-effort question (i.e.: “which one would you choose?”) instead of stating a fact. Giving your user an easy question to answer will make it easy for them to jump into the comments.

The Experiment Never Ends

Keep in mind social media is constantly evolving, and the type of content you’re creating should be as well. The key is to keep experimenting and testing. So try one new idea this week and see what happens. If it flops, tweak it. If it soars, double down. Either way, you’re learning what resonates with your audience and that’s how ordinary posts become engagement magnets.
