Project Overview

The Uptown Studios Design team had been designing the quarterly publication of California Education Technology Professional Association’s (CETPA) EdTech Journal for two years when CETPA rebranded itself as CITE, California IT in Education. Wanting to rebrand the journal so it would fit with their new brand, Uptown Studios once again collaborated with CITE to create the digital exclusive CITE Journal.

BACKGROUND

California IT in Education is a not-for-profit, professional membership association supporting the IT Professionals working in schools. Their members are the dedicated individuals supporting hardware, software, help desk, data, WiFi, providing training, and installing and maintaining the infrastructure as the technology used in schools is now part of the Internet of Things (IoT). The CITE Journal supports CITE’s mission by providing member-written articles and thought pieces focusing on IT in schools K-20.

DISCOVERY

Needing to align the journal with their new brand, CITE wasn’t quite sure what direction they should go with their journal. So, the Uptown Studios Design Team did some brainstorming and suggested a direction that was more modern, but also a little more serious and professional. A direction settled on, the design team then examined how journal elements might fit within the brand’s website, PowerPoint design, and other marketing pieces.

DESIGN

Since a different design agency created the rebrand for CITE, it was a challenge to collect the working files for all of the new brand elements. Once files were secured, the actual design of the journal flowed easily. Once a basic template for the journal approved, the design team moved into actually flowing text and placing ads. However, ads presented a bit of a challenge. With ads often late or submitted at an incorrect size, the designer had to juggle page counts while finding better ad placements amongst all of the Journal’s articles, images, and spreads. All pages finalized, the magazine went to print and mail.

RESULTS

  • Fully designed magazine with ad placement and mailing
  • Print & mail 5,000 copies
